Every December, a certain kind of red appears. Bright, glossy, a little loud. It looks wonderful at the Christmas party and slightly apologetic by the second week of January.

I have bought that bag. I have watched it move from the front of the wardrobe to the back, then to the top shelf, then to the donation pile. (It was a very good party, though.)

When I chose the Garnet colourway for the Iluka, I wanted the opposite. A colour that feels like the season when the season arrives, and like a decision the rest of the year.

Festive reds are usually designed for one moment.

They are bright because the lights are bright. They are glossy because the season is glossy. Then the decorations come down and the bag still looks dressed for a party that ended.

The problem is not red. The problem is the wrong red.

A colour that lasts all year needs three things:

Depth. A shade with some darkness in it reads as considered, not costume.
Warmth. Warm undertones sit beautifully with neutrals, denim, linen and tailoring.
Restraint. The bag should carry colour, not shout it.

Why Garnet Works: A Jewel Tone, Not a Novelty

Garnet is a deep, warm red with wine in it. It has the richness of the season without the sparkle. In candlelight it looks festive. In a boardroom it looks composed. On a Tuesday in May, it looks like you have excellent taste.

Garnet or Mulberry? Choosing Your Colour

Both are rich. They do different things.

Garnet is the warmer of the two. Red in the light, wine in the shade. It is the more festive choice and the one I would give as a Christmas gift.

Mulberry is deeper and cooler, with a berry undertone. It is named after the mulberry tree in my grandfather's backyard, so it is a colour I hold close. It reads as quietly confident all year.

If you want the colour to feel like Christmas, choose Garnet. If you want it to feel like you, in any season, either will do. (Some women have both. I am not judging.)
