There is a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from carrying a bag that was not built for your life.

Not the physical weight. The other kind. The one that comes from fishing for your phone at the bottom of a tote while someone waits. The one that comes from arriving somewhere important and realising your lipstick is in the wrong pocket, your laptop charger is buried, and your professional life is at the bottom of a pile of receipts and a rogue pen lid.

I know that exhaustion. I lived it for years. And I tracked every single point of failure before I designed my way out of it.

 I Was Not Designing a Product. I Was Solving My Own Problem.

When I designed the Iluka Executive Tote, I was not sitting in a studio trying to create the best work tote bag in Australia by researching a market I had studied from a distance.

 

I was sitting at a hotel desk at 11pm, on another work trip, looking at my bag and thinking: this still is not right.

 

I noticed the same failures every time. The laptop sleeve that was just narrow enough to make removal feel like a puzzle. The card that migrated to the bottom because there was nowhere designed to hold it. The insulated pocket that was technically present and functionally useless.

 

I had been carrying bags my whole professional life. Not one of them had been designed by someone who actually lived the life I was living.

 

So I built it myself.

Every Detail Came From a Specific Failure I Had Already Experienced

Every compartment of the Iluka Tote exists because I identified a gap from lived use. Not because a focus group said so. Not because a trend report suggested it.

When I tested various structured totes against the demands of a full professional day, I found the same pattern every time: impressive in one area, compromised in another. The premium leather bag that looked correct in the boardroom had nowhere for the laptop. The functional travel tote that handled the airport looked out of place at dinner. I found no bag that handled all the transitions of a professional woman's day without asking her to accept at least one significant compromise.

 

Here is what I noticed when I carried each type of bag through a working week:

The designer tote collapsed the moment it held laptop weight. The laptop bag read as transit gear in a client meeting. The hybrid bags felt like neither. I kept notes. I kept testing. I kept arriving places with the wrong thing.

 

The padded sleeve that holds a 16 inch laptop without dedicating the whole bag to it. The sealed insulated compartment at the base that keeps food cold for eight hours without condensation reaching the rest of the interior. The hidden card slots that replace the wallet function entirely. The key leash that means keys are in the same place every single time. None of these were design concepts. They were solutions to failures I had documented personally, across years of professional travel.

What I Learned Testing Bags Before I Built One

When I carried a standard laptop tote on a two-day interstate trip, I found myself repacking it in the taxi on the way to the airport because nothing had a fixed location. By the time I reached security, I had touched every item in the bag twice looking for my boarding pass.

 

When I tested a premium structured tote with no laptop sleeve, I found the laptop wrapped in a jumper at the bottom of the main cavity by day two. Not ideal at customs.

 

When I tried the insulated shopper as a work bag for a week, I noticed it read as a lunch bag in every professional context I moved through. The meetings were fine. The way I felt walking into them was not.

 

I tested eight bags over two years before I concluded that the product I needed did not exist and started designing it.

What Protection Means When You Have Built Something Real

When we applied for Australian Registered Design protection for the Iluka Tote, it was not a box we were ticking.

According to IP Australia, a Registered Design protects the visual features of a product for up to ten years under the Designs Act 2003. Fewer than one in five design applications in the accessories category come from women-founded businesses. We are one of them.

That number means that the hours I spent getting the structure right, the proportions, the silhouette, the details that make it look effortless from the outside , those are not just ideas. They are protected intellectual property, filed in my name, recognised by Australian law.

Since launching in September 2024, the Iluka has sold out multiple times across Australia, the United States, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

 

It has been featured in 7News, Onya Magazine, Women's Reporter, Women's Insider, and Ocean Road Magazine. It was a finalist in the Beam Awards.

 

 

I found, when I started talking to the women buying the Iluka, that they had the same list I had. The same failures. The same Tuesday morning where everything was in the wrong place. The same exhaustion that is not about weight.

 

They were not looking for a bag. They were looking for something that had already thought of it.
